Marion is an experienced language teacher who started her work in the UK at the University of Leeds Language Centre in 2007. After a few years at Leeds, she then worked at the University of Bradford as a Learning Adviser (Academic skills), and subsequently returned to the University of Leeds in 2013 to be employed in the School of Dentistry as an Academic Skills Adviser. In this role she worked to develop students’ academic potential, predominantly in a 1-2-1 capacity which enabled her to become familiar with the breadth and depth of the academic dental curriculum (Years 1 – 5 and taught Postgraduates).

In 2016 she changed role to become the Dental School’s International Tutor and launched a new level 0 module ‘Introduction to Dentistry and Medicine’ which aims to enhance the language and academic skills of international students hoping to join Dentistry and Medicine as undergraduates. Marion’s current 0.6 fte International Tutor role, which is part-funded by the Language Centre, is split three ways: leading the Intro to Den / Med module, supporting the learning of students (international and UK) on all undergraduate and taught postgraduate dental courses in bookable 1-2-1 appointments, and running bespoke in-sessional workshops for international students at Level 0, Level 1 and for postgraduates.

Medicine and Health

Helen Sadig started working on the Gateway to Medicine programme in 2020, which offers a Foundation year and runs through into the five-year MB ChB medical degree, and averages contact with 40-45 students. This is a flagship initiative, which is designed specifically for students from widening participation backgrounds, and aims to increase diversity in the medical profession. Working closely with the Module Leader, Helen initially provided drop-in tutorials to scaffold the development of students’ academic writing, which were offered on a voluntary basis. She currently delivers six interactive lectures, which are embedded in the core Transition to Medicine module, as well as supporting a series of academic writing surgeries to help students prepare their coursework assignments on Gateway to Medicine.
